Cleaning Highly Extractive & Resinous Woods

Special attention is needed when cleaning exotic hardwoods such as, redwood, cedar and mahogany. Hardwoods are highly extractive and resinous woods. Many hardwood cleaners can darken these woods, including brand new cedar and redwood that contain tannin which may start to gray or blacken within the first year. Thompson's® WaterSeal® 3 in 1 Wood Cleaner helps restore wood's natural color and beauty by gently removing tannin bleed/stains and other contaminants.

Project Tools

In order to properly clean these types of wood, there are some essential things you will need:
  • Thompson's® WaterSeal® 3 in 1 Wood Cleaner
  • Protective gear - long-sleeved shirt, pants, proper eye protection and rubber gloves
  • Plastic bucket or other non-metal container to put the cleaner in. We recommend using a synthetic bristle brush or roller if you choose this method.
  • If you would prefer to use a pump-up sprayer, then you will not require a bucket. You will need a garden hose or pressure washer to rinse the surface after applying the product.
  • Clean equipment and brushes with soap and water after use
