Choosing Between Semi-Transparent And Solid Stains

The final look of stained wood is affected by whether you've used a semi-transparent or solid stain.

Semi-transparent stains impart a subtle color, which allows the natural beauty of both the grain and the texture of the wood to show through. Semi-transparent stains can be applied to untreated wood surfaces or wood previously stained with a lighter shade of semi-transparent stain. They are not recommended on previously painted wood or wood stained with a solid coating.

Solid stains cover the wood grain while letting the natural texture of the wood show through. Solid stains can be applied to all exterior wood surfaces including those previously painted or stained.
