Protecting And Allowing Your Wood To Gray Naturally
If you want protection that allows your deck to gray naturally, use our traditional Thompson's® WaterSeal® Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer or our Thompson's® WaterSeal® Advanced Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer, a maximum strength water-based formula.
- Surface and substrate must be free of all stains from mildew, dust, oil, soot and grease.
- Prior to application, clean all surfaces with a Thompson's® WaterSeal® cleaner according to the package directions.
- For best results, apply with a paint pad or brush. If using a garden or pump-up sprayer, you will need to back-brush to even out the finish.
- Not recommended for use on painted or recently stained surfaces.
- Overspray of product onto glass should be removed immediately with paint thinner or mineral spirits. Cover plants and shrubs. If using a sprayer, move all objects that could come in contact with overspray. Certain surfaces, including some stucco and stabilized adobe, may "bleed" in the presence of solvents thereby resulting in discoloration. A test patch should be made in an inconspicuous place before treating the entire surface.
Length of time needed before re-application will vary depending on the product, surface and exposure conditions, but expected protection is one to three years. To determine when re-application is needed, simply use the Thompson's® WaterSeal® "Splash Test".
The "Splash Test" can tell you when to protect — use the Splash Test to see if you have a surface that needs protection. Pour a glass of water onto the wood you want to test. If the water is immediately absorbed and makes the surface noticeably darker, the surface is not waterproofed. If the water is not absorbed, the wood is protected.
