Clean Working Tips
CONSERVE WATER
When filling up a bucket, mixing a solution or other projects using a hose, do not leave the water running when not using. Shut the hose or faucet off to conserve water.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
If using an electric pressure washer or power tools, unplug the device when it is not being used. This will conserve energy.
Do not keep your power tools on the charger longer than specified in the instructions. Overcharging the tool will kill the battery and consumes surplus energy.
CLEAN AIR
Consider choosing low-VOC formulas. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), which are emitted as vapors, are contained in most waterproofers, paints, varnishes and many other common household products. All Thompson's® WaterSeal® products comply with required VOC regulations to help to improve air quality. Our water-based products, however, specifically feature "low VOCs". This includes the Thompson's® WaterSeal® Advanced line and our Deck & House Waterproofing Stains.
If using a gas pressure washer, shut the device off when it is not being used. This will reduce the amount of pollution that goes into the air.
SAFER ENVIRONMENT
When working with chemical products, cover plants and shrubs to protect them from overspray. Uncover promptly after use.
Do not burn pressure-treated lumber or use it for wood chips, compost or mulch. Check your local regulations about how to dispose of pressure-treated lumber.
SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY
If you are working with wood products, ensure they come from sustainable well-managed forests. Look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo on products.
REDUCE WASTE / DON'T POLLUTE
Whenever you're remodeling or redecorating your outdoor spaces, consider whether or not you might be able to give your old materials to someone else, rather than throwing them away. You never know who might be able to use your old patio furniture or even a pile of broken bricks!
Often with products using LESS IS MORE. When applying a waterproofer such a Thompson's® WaterSeal® Advanced Waterproofers or Thompson's® WaterSeal® Waterproofer Plus Wood Protectors follow product label instructions. Only one light coat is necessary. Applying more will not improve the performance of the coating and tackiness will result if over-applied.
Containers with hazardous materials (product liquids: cleaners, waterproofers, stains, paints etc.) should not be thrown in the trash or poured down the drain. See if a friend or neighbor can use the excess product. If not, contact your local environmental health or municipal department for advice on where you can safely dispose of hazardous waste and if there is a hazardous waste collection program in your community.
When you have completed your project, rinse out plastic containers and recycle them. Rinse any brushes, rollers, or other tools used for applying the product and/or scrubbing. See product label for clean up instructions. NOTE: Another benefit of water-based products like the Thompson's® WaterSeal® Advanced line is that they offer soap and water clean-up reducing the need to use harsh solvents.
Use rechargeable batteries for your power tools, if possible. This helps reduce garbage and also keeps toxic metals such as mercury from getting into the environment. Another alternative is to buy batteries with reduced toxic materials.
